The Federal Government of Nigeria has reported five new confirmed cases of coronavirus. This brings the total number of cases in Nigeria to eight.
The Minister of Health Osagie Ehanire confirmed the cases during a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
He explained that three of the victims came from the United States of America including a mother and child while two others also from the US, and an American who came via the nation’s land border.
Four cases are Lagos and while one is from Ekiti.
At Press Conference, Minister of Health was asked about the coronavirus patient who came in via Nigeria’s land border. He said it was a foreign national on a biking trip – there were 2 of them but only one tested positive. Other case is negative. Surveillance helped track them.
Furthermore on the new development, the minister said:
“Nigeria is in the Importation stage of COVID19, not the Community Transmission Stage. That’s why we are very focused on Contact Tracing at this time. the National Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) is doing a great job supporting State Health Authorities with tracking and tracing.”
According to the NCDC, a detailed travel history of each case is being compiled & contact tracing has begun.
The NCDC also says its National Emergency Operations Centre is supporting response in the states The Federal Government through the Ministry of health is conducting risk assessment to initiate other relevant measures.
The Nigerian government has already stepped up measures against the coronavirus
Nigeria is restricting entry into the country for travellers from: China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, United States of America, Norway, United Kingdom, Netherlands & Switzerland .
